Homewood buys land for new water pump station

The purchase of a property intended to be the site of a pumping station for water from Hammond, Indiana was approved Tuesday by the Homewood village board.

The 2.77 acres were bought from Reliable Materials Corporation for $250,000. The land is in Thornton near 183rd Street and Thornton Glenwood Road.

About 52,000 cubic yards of soil are now piled at the property, but Reliable Materials agreed to remove it and bring the site to grade as part of the sale, according to village documents.

Engineering firm Burns and McDonnell completed the preliminary design of the booster pump station and will meet with village staff to finalize it soon.

Mayor Richard Hofeld thanked Public Works Director John Schaefer for his work on the project.

In other business, the board approved the donation of 63 bicycles to Restoration Ministries in Harvey. The bikes were found or recovered by Homewood police and have been held in storage for at least 180 days without being claimed.

A budget adjustment of $25,000 was approved for sewer repairs on Lyn Court, Homewood Avenue and Highland Avenue.

The village’s 2020 financial audit was also accepted. Naperville firm Lauterbach and Amen conducted the audit.

“We’ll have some difficult times in the upcoming year, but I’m sure with good fiscal management we’ll be just fine,” Hofeld said.

The board also approved several committee reappointments.

Anita Cochran was reappointed to the fire and police commission, Alene Rutzky and Jack Levitt to the senior advisory committee, Regina Zohfeld and Paul Kramer to the tree committee. Those are three-year terms. Cate Roberts was reappointed to the beautification committee for a five-year term.

A beer and wine only liquor license was approved for Vida Tacos at 18102 Martin Avenue.
