A decorated bench on display in downtown Homewood as part of the Benches for Change project was accidentally damaged over the weekend.
Homewood spokeswoman Jennifer Quirke said the damage occurred sometime between 9 p.m. Friday and 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
Village officials have not determined who was responsible for the damage. The incident remains under investigation, Quirke said.
The bench could not be repaired.
The decorated bench was part of a public art project that will benefit the South Suburban Family Shelter, an agency that provides support for victims of domestic violence. Twenty-two benches were purchased by participating local businesses and organizations.
The benches were decorated by each sponsoring organization, and village public works crews placed them throughout the downtown area for viewing — and resting — during the summer months.
The benches will be auctioned off early in October.
