Denman’s family looked on, including his brother A.J. Denman who has been a police officer in the village for nearly six years. Their dad, James, was on the police force for more than 20 years before his death in 2009.

Alex Denman said he decided on a career in law enforcement in high school at Lincoln-Way North. He graduated from Western Illinois University with a degree in criminal justice. Before his appointment to the police department, he had been a staff member at a juvenile facility.

Denman will begin his training Aug. 31 through the Cook County Sheriff’s 400-hour police recruit training academy.
