Graduation 2020: James Hart School

Like many districts, Homewood District 153 will be hosting a June 2 virtual graduation for its 230 members of the Class of 2020 posted to the district website and on YouTube.

Like many districts, Homewood District 153 will be hosting a June 2 virtual graduation for its 230 members of the Class of 2020 posted to the district website and on YouTube.

Ava Loudon, vice president of the National Junior Honor Society, got to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to open the program.

Ava, daughter of Darcie and Greg Loudon, said her family and grandparents will be watching the program. She’s disappointed they couldn’t see a live graduation, but thankful the district is doing something for the class.

In her class address, Violet Quirke, daughter of Jennifer and Nick Quirke, reminded her classmates about the good times they’ve had and how much she misses her teachers.

Not having a traditional graduation “isn’t the end of the world for me,” Violet said. She’s going to look back on the fun she had at White Pines Ranch in Oregon, Illinois, and being on the volleyball team in seventh and eighth grades, including the run up to the state title in seventh grade. “All the girls were so nice and we really got to bond together in the two seasons we played,” she said.
Ava served on the back stage crew for the spring musical this year, and ran track and cross-country.

Ava and Violet are excited to start at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in the fall, and both are looking forward to taking extracurriculars. Violet is starting with Algrebra I in summer school. She is “very excited” for the math and art classes. Ava has been selected for the International Baccalaureate program, and is looking forward to engineering courses.

Many of the end-of-the-year programs at Hart School didn’t happen, but the National Junior Honor Society did induct eighth graders Sophia Krupa, daughter of Laura and John Krupa, and Zainab Ibrahim, daughter of Kayode Ibrahim and Silifat Jones-Ibrahim, into NJHS with a special virtual ceremony May 12. They were selected for their outstanding academic record. NJHS requires at least a 3.75 average on a 4.0 scale over the last six semesters.

Both Sophia and Zainab will attend Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
