Coping with COVID: May 21

State regions are on track to move into phase 3 of the Restore Illinois plan by the end of the month. Case rate flattening in Homewood.

On track for phase 3. The northeast region, including Chicago and the South Suburbs, is on track to reach phase 3 in the Restore Illinois plan, possibly at the end of May, according to Illinois Department of Public Health data. The rate of positive test results for COVID-19 is at 17.4 percent, a more than 5 percent decline in the past two weeks. Hospital admissions are down more than 44 percent since May 1. Phase 3 includes additional easing of the restrictions imposed during Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home executive order.

Curve flattening in Homewood. From May 1 to May 8, the number of COVID-19 cases increased more than 27 percent, from 160 to 204. Over the next week or so, the rate went down to an 11 percent increase. As of Wednesday, May 20, the village had 235 confirmed cases and 25 deaths attributed to the disease. Of the deaths, 23 were residents of two local nursing homes. Flossmoor’s increase in cases and deaths has generally been slower and steadier. The village currently has 72 confirmed cases and seven deaths due to COVID-19.
