Coping with COVID: May 10

A good day and good trends. Gov. J.B. Pritzker has been quick to caution people not read too much into daily swings in COVID-19 statistics, urging instead attention to longer term trends. On Sunday, though, the daily numbers and trends seem to be going in the right direction. The day saw the fewest new cases in the state, 1,656, since April 21. It was only the third time since then that new cases have been under 2,000, but it was the third day in a row that they dropped.

It was only the third time since then that new cases have been under 2,000, but it was the third day in a row that they dropped.

Deaths also dropped to 57 in the previous 24 hours after setting a record of 176 on May 5. Deaths seem to fluctuate more dramatically than new cases. The day before the record was set there were 46 deaths recorded.

The rate of positive test results has fallen every day for the past week, from nearly 17 percent on May 4 to just over 12 percent on Sunday.

Pritzker and Illinois Department of Public Health Director Ngozi Ezike also regularly caution people not to assume that good numbers mean it’s time to stop social distancing practices. Those practices are credited with getting results, and because there still is no vaccine or effective treatment for the virus, to ease social distancing too fast would like result in new spikes in cases and deaths.

Locally, new cases edged up slightly, with Homewood adding three for a total of 208 and Flossmoor adding two for a total of 64.

The rate of positive COVID-19 test results reported on Sunday, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
