Homewood library offers free books, online services during pandemic

Whether it’s the printed word or an online book or movie you’re after, the Homewood Public Library is set to help out while the stay-at-home order is on during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Come by the library at 17917 Dixie Highway and pick up a book. They’re free! Friends of the Homewood Public Library and staff of the library have collected books from various sources, including Friends book sale books, and are making them available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays outside the library’s front doors.

“We request that anyone approaching the cart practice social distancing and wait one at a time, or approach as a family, and read and follow the instructions on the cart to insure everyone’s safety,” said Colleen Waltman, the library’s director.

While coming into the library is still off limits, Waltman reminds patrons to check out the library’s Facebook page for virtual and Facebook live events.

No library card? Waltman said now’s a perfect time to get one. Anyone in the 60430 ZIP code can get a card online. It will give you immediate access “to all of our electronic resources, including e-books, audiobooks, movies online and more,” Waltman said.

Virtual library cards will be good for 90 days.

“Once the library reopens, the cardholder needs to come in to validate the card, or it will automatically expire after the 90 days,” she explained. The link to apply is https://swanlibraries.net/patron-registration-form/?library=HWS

“The Homewood library staff is working remotely as needed and able. There are many tasks that can be performed online, including reviewing and ordering books, e-books and audiobooks,” Waltman said.
