Nicor project aims to modernize gas infrastructure in Homewood

Nicor has begun work on gas lines and meters in Homewood as part of its Investing in Illinois program to modernize natural gas infrastructure.

The improvements include replacing some natural gas pipelines and moving meters from inside to outside of homes and businesses.

Nicor and its contractor KS Energy will also inspect sewers.

Village Public Works Director John Schaefer said Homewood doesn’t expect any disruption of other service, but an accidental hit of a water service line is possible.

“If this does happen, public works is prepared to respond right away in order to make repairs,” Schaefer said.

The areas affected include 18124 to 18154 Aberdeen Street, 18000 to 18032 Armitage Court, 1313 to 1555 Burr Oak Road, 18110 to 18217 Center Avenue, 1111 to 1349 Hickory Road, 18004 to 18055 Hood Avenue, 17916 to 17941 Lahaigh Road, 1315 to 1555 Linden Road, 17947 to 18029 Loomis Avenue, 1101 to 1253 Olive Road and 1055 to 1607 Ridge Road.

The work is a result of the Natural Gas Consumer, Safety & Reliability Act signed by then-Governor Pat Quinn in 2013. It’s paid for with increases to delivery fees on gas bills that have already been in effect.

Residents may be contacted to schedule an appointment if access inside a home or business is necessary. A location for a new outdoor meter will be determined and property owners will be asked to move obstructions to the area before the appointment.

Some work may be necessary to reconfigure a property’s piping, which would result in a three-hour disruption of service. That time is expected to be longer in buildings with multiple meters.

Lawns and sidewalks may also be marked with spray paint or flags. Residents are asked not to interfere with the markings. Nicor will fix any landscaping or paving issues caused by the work.
