Homewood officials announce precautionary measures in response to COVID-19

Village of Homewood officials are closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and are implementing recommendations released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

While our immediate region has had no confirmed cases of the virus, Homewood is working hard to help ensure the continued safety of all of our residents and village staff. The village continues to closely follow recommended protocols from the CDC and the IDPH and has contingency protocols in place should the virus impact village staff and the community.

The village is taking the following actions to minimize exposure and potential spread of COVID-19 to staff and residents.

  • All regularly scheduled meetings of village advisory boards (committees and commissions) are suspended until further notice.
  • The village is suspending all non-critical services provided by first responders (i.e., fire inspections, water meter inspections and replacements). Please note, first responders will continue to respond to 911 calls.
  • The March 28, 2020, Indoor Farmer’s Market is canceled.
  • The Homewood Science Center has canceled or postponed all public events and open hours until further notice.

Normal municipal operations are unaffected at this time. Building inspection services (electrical, framing, windows, etc.) will continue, along with the village’s 9 a.m. to noon Saturday hours for water bill payments and vehicle sticker purchases.

Regularly scheduled Village Board meetings, at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays will continue.

“Our priorities are in line with what is being recommended by the CDC and the IDPH,” said Mayor Richard Hofeld. “We are optimistic that our efforts will be successful and incidents of exposure will be kept to a minimum.”

Village officials ask residents to be understanding as staff members take extra sanitary precautions when exchanging money and paperwork with residents. These measures will help keep employees and residents safe and healthy as the COVID-19 situation continues to change. The village also encourages residents to use the drop box located outside the south doors of Village Hall for municipal payments.

It is up to all of us to do our part and ensure  we minimize the opportunity for the virus to spread. Practicing good hygiene like washing hands properly, covering mouths when coughing, staying home when feeling ill, and cleaning commonly used surfaces with disinfectants, are great first steps.

As the village continues to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic, they ask that the community stay calm. The village will update residents of operational changes and make adjustments as needed. Homewood officials will also evaluate the resumption of meetings and non-critical services as recommended by the CDC and IDPH.
