Flossmoor Fire Department set a new record for emergency calls in 2019, responding to 1,720 requests for service.

Flossmoor Fire Department set a new record for emergency calls in 2019, responding to 1,720 requests for service.

Last year’s number constituted an 11 percent increase over 1,543 requests for service in 2018, the department’s previous record high for calls.

Six structure fires were reported in Flossmoor last year. The Flossmoor Fire Department also assisted in an additional 40 structure fire responses in neighboring communities.

There were also 1,172 requests for emergency medical service, including 85 motor vehicle accident responses and another 520 fire calls, department officials said.

None of the fire calls were a result of holiday lighting, which points to the success of the department’s seasonal “Keep the Wreath Red” campaign.

“The Flossmoor Fire Department thanks our residents for their diligence and fire safety this holiday season,” said Assistant Fire Chief Keith Damm. “We’ve worked hard to make sure that we’re providing quality education and information to our residents, and it appears that they are receiving it well.”

"Keep the Wreath Red” is an annual Flossmoor Fire Department program that educates residents on the importance of fire safety and works to eliminate holiday lighting fires. The campaign runs from Thanksgiving Day through New Year’s Day.

The Flossmoor Fire Department is comprised of five full-time officers, nine contract firefighters/paramedics, eight part-time firefighter/paramedics and 19 paid-on-call firefighters with a daily staffing of five firefighters, including paramedics on duty to respond to emergencies.
