Parker seeks inspirational stories during Black History Month

Parker Junior High School students this month are conducting video interviews with parents and other community members about how they were influenced by African American role models, and how those persons helped them succeed in their own lives.

Inspirational stories are at the forefront of this year’s Black History Month celebration at Parker Junior High School.

Parker students this month are conducting video interviews with parents and other community members about how they were influenced by African American role models, and how those persons helped them succeed in their own lives. In February, Black History Month, those interviews will be shared during the daily video announcements at Parker and participants in the project will tell their stories during a Feb. 25 event at the school.

Parker is still looking for persons who’d like to tell their personal stories about inspirational figures in their lives.

Amabel Crawford, Parker’s principal, said celebrating Black History Month, past and present, will be a learning opportunity for students as they learn how African Americans throughout history influenced their parents and neighbors.

“The opportunity is open to everyone,” Crawford said. “Partnering with parents and community members will help students make real connections with role models close to home.”

Parker’s Black History Month committee – made up of parents, teachers and staff members – contacted parents and other community members in December. About a dozen persons have already responded to that call, said Lisa Kauffman, a Flossmoor District 161 parent and committee member.

Students will introduce speakers at the Feb. 25 event. Crawford said the evening will also include a student-led performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

Persons who are interested in telling their stories can contact Parker’s main office at 708-647-5400 through the end of January.
