A fountain at the entrance to the Flossmoor Park neighborhood for decades was severely damaged in a traffic accident last week.

The fountain, in the 2200 block of Carroll Parkway, was partially demolished when struck by a car that drove completely across the structure. The vehicle was headed northeast on Carroll when it hit the fountain, destroying a concrete piece of the structure that was about four feet high and the bowl where it was located.

According to a Flossmoor police report, the accident was reported at 10:17 p.m. on Dec. 11. The car, a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, was driven by a 19-year-old Homewood man, and he had a single passenger in the vehicle.

The driver told police that he looked away for a moment and then drove into the fountain. He was cited for damage to village property, the police report states.

No one was injured in the accident. The car came to rest after traversing the fountain and immediately began leaking auto fluids. It had to be towed away, the report says.

Flossmoor Village Manager Bridget Wachtel told the H-F Chronicle that the village will restore the fountain but does not know when that will happen. She added that the structure that was damaged last week was not the original fountain at that site.

The circular fountain is located on the west end of Flossmoor Park where Carroll Parkway intersects with Gardner Road on the north and Evans Road on the south.
