In order to determine the cause of death for 21-year-old Jarad Anthony Higgins, AKA Juice Wrld, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has said further study is required.
Higgins, an internationally rising talent, graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor High School in 2017. He died Sunday at Midway Airport in Chicago, after his plane landed at a private hangar.
In an email, spokeswoman Natalia Derevyanny said the Medical Examiner’s office will conduct studies to identify the cause and manner of Higgins’ death, including cardiac pathology, neuropathology, toxicology and histology (cells, tissues and organs).
According to reporting from the Chicago Tribune, federal agents were waiting for Higgins and his entourage as their plane landed early Sunday morning at Midway. Officers reportedly searched the group’s luggage for “contraband,” and during that time Higgins began convulsing.
He was administered two shots of the anti-overdose drug Narcan, the Tribune reports. However, Higgins died a short time later, around 3:15 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
According to the Tribune story, the agents found 41 sealed bags of marijuana, six bottles of prescription codeine cough syrup, three pistols, a high-capacity ammunition magazine and metal-piercing bullets.
A number of music celebrities sent out messages of mourning on social media Monday, including Chicago’s Chance the Rapper who said on Instagram “Millions of people, not just in Chicago but around the world are hurting because of this and don’t know what to make of it. Im sorry. Love you and God bless your soul.”
At H-F High School this week, counseling services are available for students grieving Higgins’ death. According to H-F High School spokeswoman Jodi Bryant, Higgins is remembered at the school as “brilliant and creative,” as well as caring and outgoing.
