The downpour Saturday evening closed the Dixie Highway viaduct in Homewood and forced drivers in Flossmoor to use only one lane of the Flossmoor Road viaduct.

The 183rd Street viaduct in Homewood was open with no problems.

It was a month ago that the Homewood-Flossmoor area was inundated with rain that caused major flooding in the area. Fortunately, no major problems were reported, although traffic was snarled because of the viaducts.

One resident who lives near the intersection of Berry and Sunset in Flossmoor was out with his rake trying to clear a storm sewer. He stood on the grass, water up to his ankles, using a camper’s light to try and detect where the drain was, but his best efforts failed to alleviate  the high water.

Generally, streets were passable, although some intersections did have standing water.

The National Weather Service issued an urban and small stream flood advisory and flash flood watch. Rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected across the Chicago region.
