Sept. 22 is date for 10th annual Foundation 153 walk/run, dash

You may be old enough to remember Afro Sheen, the hair product that showed black Americans in the 1960s and '70s how they could have a beautiful appearance by enhancing their Afro hair style.

Braelyn Hall, 14, is too young to remember when Afro Sheen hit the market, but she’s learned much about advertising. Her project, “The Power of Black Advertising,” is representing Illinois in the  National History Day Competition.

Saturday, July 2

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
