Four contestants were given a time limit of 20 minutes to consume 11 ounces of frozen yogurt on Saturday, Aug. 10, during Forever Yogurt’s five-year anniversary celebration.
They didn’t need that long.
Three of the four had clean plates in about a minute.
There was a tie for first place in the contest. Maya Drayton of Hazel Crest and Nnaeto Emethede of Flossmoor each finished their yogurt in 54 seconds.
At stake was a coupon for free yogurt for a year.
Competitors were selected in a drawing from customers who applied to participate in the contest. The other competitors were Kasayat Shokundi of Matteson and Mykel Andrews of Hazel Crest.
Josette Fourte, who owns Forever Yogurt in Cherry Creek Plaza with her husband, Kevin, admitted she was being a bit cautious with the amount of yogurt in the first eating contest sponsored by the shop.
“Maybe next year I’ll give you all a tub,” she joked as the contestants winced from the “brain freeze” effect of eating the frozen treat in such a short time.
Andrews surmised that flavor choice might be key to being competitive. His daughter, Maya, had urged him to choose chocolate, which has a smooth consistency, and he said next year that might be his choice if he gets back in the contest.
Drayton and Emethede were not the only customers who left the party with a year’s worth of free yogurt coming to them. A number of participants in the “spin to win” activity also hit the yogurt jackpot, including the first spinner, Nicole Cornelius of Chicago Heights.
By the end of the celebration at the Homewood store, 22 people had won free yogurt for a year, Fourte said. The winners were all ages, including eight children.
“The event was great!” Fourte said. “I didn’t know what to expect with the yogurt eating contest, as we have never done anything like that before. It was truly fun to watch the contestants because they were hilarious.”
