Public Art Commission seeks submissions for ‘Flags of Flossmoor’

The Flossmoor Public Art Commission is seeking artists and photographers to submit digital images of original artwork to be printed on outdoor flags. 
 

The printed flags will be on display on lampposts lining the streets of downtown Flossmoor throughout the summer and available for public auction culminating at Flossmoor Fest on Sept. 7. 

The entry deadline is Friday, June 7, with accepted work announced on Flag Day, June 14.

The Flossmoor Public Art Commission chose the theme of the exhibition, “Flags of Flossmoor — Welcoming. Beautiful. Connected,” to reflect the village motto. The commission believes residents choose Flossmoor for beautiful homes and neighborhoods, for good schools and easy access to Chicago, for a diverse and inclusive community in a family-friendly environment. The commission believes that this exhibition of images printed on flags will make a beautiful addition to the village during summer months and in private collections afterwards and will feature the talent of artists near and far. 

Artists are not required to donate the artwork, only digital images. Professional artists/photographers, students and individuals of any age can submit work to be considered.

There is no entry fee. Submissions will be juried by members of the Flossmoor Public Art Commission. Awards include inclusion on a commemorative poster, available to the public for purchase at Flossmoor Fest; a top fundraiser award for the entry with highest final auction bid; and a best entry award for artist 18 years of age or under, to be announced at Flossmoor Fest. 

The images of the selected original flag designs will also be posted, along with artists’ information and links to artists’ websites, on artflossmoor.com, flossmoor.org, the Village of Flossmoor social media pages and the public auction website. 

A commemorative poster featuring top entries will be available for purchase.

The auction will benefit the Flossmoor Public Art Commission, a group of volunteers selected by the Flossmoor Village Board of Trustees. The commission’s work is supported entirely by donations.

The commission is responsible for making recommendations for the acquisition and placement of appropriate outdoor art within the village. In addition, the commission is responsible for community outreach and fundraising for the Flossmoor Sculpture Garden. 

The Flossmoor Public Art program was established in 1998 through private donations and an Illinois FIRST grant. 

Since then, the Flossmoor Village Board of Trustees and the Flossmoor Public Art Commission have maintained their vision of making Flossmoor home to a rotating exhibit of world-class sculpture. Outdoor sculptures are installed in the village square, along charming residential streets and in the award-winning Flossmoor Gardens and Sculpture Park. 

The Flossmoor Sculpture Gardens’ current collection consists of nine permanent sculptures by distinguished artists Bruce Beasley, Stephen Fischer, Richard Hunt, Howard Kalish, Terry Karpowicz, Mark Lundeen, Scott McMillin, Judith Shea and Jack Howard-Potter.

There are six rotational artworks by artists Mike Grucza, Ed McCullough, Bruce Niemi, Luis Kaiulani and Homewood-Flossmoor High School art students.
