Organizer: Peaceology forum May 5 to serve as foundation of community’s response to racism

Seven Homewood-Flossmoor High School students have won the right to compete at the National Speech and Debate Association’s national competition this summer. Their selections capped an outstanding year in which H-F students brought home top prizes in state speech and debate competition.

Teacher and coach Janine Stroemer said overall the speech team finished the season with 18 tournament placements out of 23 contests entered. H-F won seven championships, including both the regional and sectional meets that moved students into state competition sponsored by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Saturday, July 2

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
