Local Freedom Trail hike set for Saturday

Discover local Underground Railroad sites during a spring Freedom Trail hike in the Little Calumet River area on Saturday, April 6.

The two-hour tour will be led by Larry McClellan, retired Governors State University professor, and Tom Shepherd of the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project.

Participants will travel by bus and on foot through several locations as McClellan and Shepherd explain how escaped slaves traveled through the area in search of a route to Canada for their freedom, and how local abolitionists offered assistance.

Participants should wear weather-appropriate clothing and meet at 1 p.m. at the Beaubien Woods boat launch at 134th Street and the Little Calumet River.

Pre-registration is a must as seats will be reserved on the bus. There is a $10 donation request, $5 for those 17 and younger. Reservations can be made with Shepherd at [email protected] or by calling him at 773-370-3305.
