The Greenest Region Compact is an agreement through the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus that aims to promote sustainability in Chicagoland through 49 goals designed to “guide municipal action, support mayors in their role as environmental leaders and foster collaboration that will have positive impacts on the region,” according to the MMC website.

The Homewood village board approved a resolution to enter the compact at its March 26 meeting. Flossmoor adopted the compact in April of 2018. Richton Park, Olympia Fields and Oak Forest have also adopted the agreement.

The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus is a public policy member organization for the Chicago area. It’s board includes directors from Chicago and nine suburban municipal groups. Flossmoor Mayor Paul Braun represents the South Suburban Mayors and Managers association.

The Greenest Region Compact is not a binding contract, but it helps guides municipalities toward goals of sustainability and green governance. The Homewood resolution specifically cites energy efficiency, water conservation, urban forestry and participation in the Clean Air Counts campaign to improve air quality in the region.

The compact’s framework, put together by over 70 environmental and government groups, organizes the goals into 10 categories including climate, economic development, energy, land use, leadership, mobility, municipal operations, sustainable communities, water and waste and recycling. Each category is broken down further and includes strategies to accomplish each goal with links to information available for research.
