Journey Care event cancelled

The Village of Flossmoor in celebrating Black History Month by reflecting on local African-American artists, past and present, who have impacted Flossmoor.

Artists can be nominated for recognition regardless of their medium, and can include musical artists, sculptors, poets, architects, painters, dancers, fashion designers and persons with other creative outlets.

Interested persons can nominate artists through Feb. 7. Nomination forms are available at the village website, www.flossmoor.org. if someone wants to nominate an artist but doesn’t have all the requested information on the form, they just need to provide a name to the village and as much contact information as possible.

Nominated artists will be profiled and highlighted on Flossmoor’s website and social media channels and then again as part of a collection in the spring village newsletter.

Online profiles will include information about the artists’ connection to and impact on the Flossmoor community, their inspirations as artists, their contributions to black history and moments from black history that continue to inspire them.

Additionally, the village will highlight work by the artists by sharing their websites, photos and more.

The project is sponsored by Flossmoor’s Community Relations Commission, which for the last three years has hosted Black History Month projects highlighting prominent African Americans residents and business owners.

To cap off Black History Month, the CRC is partnering with the Flossmoor Public Library to host a special presentation by Larry McClellan, an author and expert on the role that Illinois, and specifically the Chicago Southland, played in the journey of freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad.

The presentation will take place at 7 p.m. on March 5 at Flossmoor Village Hall.
