South Suburban Humane Society celebrates the opening of its new adoption center in Homewood. The Homewood-Flossmoor District 233 board approved the new fine arts expansion project. Homewood Arts Council held the first show at its new gallery on Ridge Road. Viking Choir provides a singing send-off to retiring director Michael Rugen. Flossmoor singer Oliv Blu described the adventure of performing on TV's "The Voice" show. The cover feature marks the 50th anniversary of Governors State University.

Fall events

Saturday, Sept. 24

  • Homewood Fall Fest and Chili Cook-off, noon to 9 p.m. Chili tasting is open to the public for a donation from 3 to 5 p.m. Three live music performances, plus horse-drawn wagon rides, a pumpkin patch, crafts and other activities.

Saturday, Oct. 15

  • Dia de los Muertos in downtown Homewood. Details to follow.
