For the seventh consecutive year, Flossmoor School District 161 female students will have the opportunity to participate in the annual Girls on the Run program.
Girls on the Run is a nationwide nonprofit organization aimed at helping third- through eighth-grade girls develop essential skills needed to navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness.
The program culminates with participants completing a celebratory 5-kilometer event alongside their coaches, parents and other volunteers.
Sign-up for District 161 participation in Girls on the Run is underway. Parents are urged to register their daughters as space is limited at each school.
In addition to training and developing healthy life skills, Girls on the Run also requires participants to host a community service project that will positively impact their communities.
Jana Budz, a program coordinator at Western Avenue School, said the community service projects can take many forms — from food or book drives, to creating special packages and cards for teachers or other community leaders.
With more than 330 5Ks per year, Girls on the Run is the largest 5K series in the world. Founded in 1996 with 13 girls, Girls on the Run now serves more than 1.6 million girls. To learn more about Girls on the Run, visit www.girlsontherun.org.
