The area's beautiful oak trees will be celebrated onSaturday at Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center,2000 Western Ave., in Olympia Fields. (Provided photo) The mighty oak has been part of legends and fables. It is used as a symbol of strength, protection and stability. It has represented Zeus in Greek mythology. 

During October, the fabled oak tree is being celebrated. The Chicago Tree Region Initiative and its supporters are marking October as Oaktober – Oak Awareness Month.

Saturday, July 2

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
