McDonald’s comforting hand helps ease life’s troubles and concerns

Sally and Mike McDonald are just really great people. Sally lives a few houses down from her elderly parents. She daily brings them breakfast, lunches and dinners. Mike is a retired Homewood police officer and now works as a detective at Union Station.

With the recent crime and violence in Homewood, I have to admit, I’ve wondered if we should move, especially as I have a 4-year-old son with special needs. After talking with Mike, all of my feelings of loyalty and love for Homewood make sense again.

With the recent crime and violence in Homewood, I have to admit, I’ve wondered if we should move, especially as I have a 4-year-old son with special needs. After talking with Mike, all of my feelings of loyalty and love for Homewood make sense again.

My golden retriever, Ruby, died a year and a half ago. She was old, and we were losing her for a few weeks when one afternoon, Ruby collapsed right at our back door. Sally saw me struggling to get Ruby inside the house and ran right over to help me.

I needed to get Ruby to the veterinarian’s office as quickly as possible, and my husband wasn’t home, so Sally insisted on coming with me. As anyone knows, losing your pet is a super hard experience, and Sally was as gracious at that time as always.

It’s comforting to know that we live next to truly good people who care about the same things we do — our community, our kids, our dogs. I know, if I needed it, there’s always an egg that can be borrowed or a lesson on gardening to be learned. I’m mostly grateful for the little things, just to walk outside and see a smiling face with a quick hello or wave.
