Summer tends to start with a burst of activity, from festivals to youth sports. By July 20, it might be time to relax with a more laid back event.

Trail Mix might be just the thing. The fourth annual event at Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood, will feature acoustic sets from 1 to 8:30 p.m. in the wooded lawn south of Black Bear Lodge.

“It’s just a cool vibe down in the woods there,” said Trail Mix founder and lead organizer Steve Ploum.

He said attendance at the event has grown each year.

This year, there will be 11 musical acts, concessions and facepainting run by local teens and an art project led by local flow artist and juggler Keaton Fisher.

The music lineup includes MG Bailey, Work in Progress, Butterfield Creek, Aileen Straley, Kirk Lindstrom, Matt Jiles, Scott Niekelski, Andrew Palmer and Christal Luster.

Featured performers will include Kenya, of Flossmoor, with her R&B-flavored jazz vocals, and The Randolph Street Blues Band, founded by local musician Jon Elfner as a showcase for long-time Chicago blues guitarist John Randolph.

Trail Mix sponsors this year include GoodSpeed Cycles, Melody Mart, The Wexler Group, the Heiferman family and Be Well Studio. Rabid Brewing and Mae’s Que House Mobile Food Truck will be serving refreshments.

Ploum said the organization is raising money through a GoFundMe campaign, and donors will have a chance to win a bicycle provided by GoodSpeed or a musical instrument provided by Melody Mart.
