Two long-time Homewood employees — Dave Ebert and Tom Gaskin — were recognized for their service to the village at the Sept. 25 Board of Trustees meeting.
Ebert, assistant director of public works, retired after 38 years with the village.
Public Works Director John Schaefer thanked Ebert for his service and noted that Ebert’s wife, Jan, also was retiring from her position in the Building Department. The couple’s last day on the job was Oct. 5.
Ebert started as a mechanic. In 1983, he was promoted to chief mechanic, and in 2014, he was promoted to assistant director, Schaefer said.

“For the past 38 years, Dave has diligently and faithfully served the village of Homewood,” Schaefer said. “I can’t say enough about what you’ve done for public works. You’ve been a great motivator and supporter of all the employees.”
Village officials passed a resolution in honor of Lt. Tom Gaskin for 20 years of service to the Homewood Fire Department.
Fire Chief Bob Grabowski lauded Gaskin’s service to the department and the village.
“His dedication to the Fire Department is second to none,” Grabowski said. “He was born to do this job.”
Gaskin is a certified paramedic and Firefighter II. He has completed National Incident Management courses and is responsible for maintaining the department’s breathing apparatus equipment. Gaskin has received numerous commendations for his work.
The board also welcomed two new employees serving in the Public Works Department. Village Clerk Marilyn Thomas administered the oath of office of maintenance worker in the utility division to Daniel Spain and Michael Victor.
Spain has been working as a seasonal employee for the department since 2008. Victor last worked for Midlothian Public Works. He has experience as a mechanic.
