Residents will have a chance to get a close-up look at Homewood’s brand new fire truck on Saturday during the annual Fire Department open house.
That will be the “biggest, shiniest thing new this year,” according to open house organizer Megan Tipton. “We will also have the fire safety superhero obstacle course for junior superheroes.”
The event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 17950 Dixie Highway will also include a crowd favorite, the live burn that demonstrates the importance and effectiveness of sprinkler systems.
Homewood firefighters and paramedics will be on hand to help families learn about fire safety through fun activities and games. The Homewood Science Center will sponsor an activity, Eggcident Experiment, which will show the importance of seat belts by demonstrating how inertia and force work.
There will be a Halloween safety display, and the fire safety smoke trailer will give youngsters an opportunity to practice home escape.
Guests will also be treated to a free hot dog lunch.
The vehicle extrication demonstration done in past years will not be included in the program this year.
