H-F High’s Nakamura named National Merit semifinalist

Homewood-Flossmoor High School senior Kensuke “Ken” Nakamura of Homewood has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. He is in the International Baccalaureate Program at H-F and is a member of the Viking Symphonic Band, H-F Viking Jazz Band and Viking Choir. He also is a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Jazz Orchestra.

Homewood-Flossmoor High School senior Kensuke “Ken” Nakamura of Homewood has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
 

He is in the International Baccalaureate Program at H-F and is a member of the Viking Symphonic Band, H-F Viking Jazz Band and Viking Choir. He also is a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Jazz Orchestra.
 
Ken, son of Sachi and Noboru Nakamura, started playing saxophone in fifth grade at Homewood’s Millennium School.
 
His selection puts him in contention for one of 7,500 scholarships offered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. He plans to major in engineering in college.
 
In addition, Adotey Doh of Hazel Crest; Barbara Burns, Joan Coderre, James Humphrey and Henry Thiros of Flossmoor; and  Margaret Doran, Jaida Fourte, Sally Pauss and Max Perez of Homewood were recognized as 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students for their exceptional academic excellence. These students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of the more than 1.6 million students who entered this year’s National Merit Scholarship competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT test in the fall of 2017.
 
“Once again, H-F is well represented in the National Merit program,” said Superintendent Von Mansfield. “Congratulations to each of our students on this great accomplishment and their national recognition.”
