Her cover feature described the Homewood Science Center's program that gives youngsters a chance to learn about physics and history with roller coaster-related activities. The program was timely. During Homewood's 125th anniversary year, it tied in with a Homewood resident, John Miller, an inventor who created a number of roller coaster innovations.There was a news story about a disagreement between Homewood and Harvey over the cost of water. Harvey gets Lake Michigan water from Chicago and sells it to Homewood . . .

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
