The Drama Group is presenting the comedy “Vanya & Sonia&Masha& Spike” with matinee and evening performances May 4 through 12 at the Milord Studio Theatre, 330 W. 202nd St. in Chicago Heights.
The comedy centers around middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia who complain and bicker about the circumstances of their lives in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. But life changes in a hurry when their movie star sister, Masha, appears at their door with her boy-toy, Spike, played by Geoffrey Purvis of Homewood. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell their house.
The cast also includes Cassandra, a sassy maid with abilities to predict the future, and Nina, a young, aspiring actress whose beauty somewhat worries Masha.
This play has several characteristics of an Anton Chekov plays, including the names of the characters, the setting in a cherry orchard and the loss of an ancestral home.
Set design is by Russ Hoganson of Homewood.
