‘Caroline, or Change’ performed at GSU this weekend

The Southland Area Theatre Ensemble will perform the musical “Caroline, or Change” Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Governors State University’s Center for Performing Arts in University Park.

The production, set in the early 1960s, focuses on a black maid working in the house of a Jewish family living in the South. The musical tells a story of political change, social change and plain old pocket change. It is brought to life through a range of musical styles from blue to Motown to spirituals.

“’Caroline, or Change’ is a beautiful, unique piece of theatre that teaches us about ourselves, our relationships, our beliefs and just how hard and inevitable change is in our world,” said J.R. Rose, a theater teacher at Homewood-Flossmoor High School who serves as artistic director of the ensemble.

Showtimes are 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2 and 3, and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4. Tickets are $28 and can be purchased online at CenterTickets.net or by phone at 708-235-2222. Tickets also can be purchased at the box office.

This performance is partially supported by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
