Fire causes damage to garbage truck in Flossmoor

A garbage truck caught fire this week during a pickup run through Flossmoor.

No injuries were reported during the Jan. 9 fire, which extensively damaged the Homewood Disposal truck, Flossmoor Assistant Fire Chief Keith Damm said.

The fire, in the 1000 block of Evans Road, was reported at 7:34 a.m. Fire crews arrived minutes later and were finished at the scene by 8:14 a.m.

Damm said it appears that the fire started in the engine compartment and spread to the passenger area. A small portion of the fire was extended into the rear of the truck, where garbage is collected.

“Our crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly and were very careful to make sure there was no fire in the trash area of the truck,” Damm said.

This fire was not caused by anything that was thrown away by a resident, he said.
