Hofeld rescued after falling through nature preserve ice

Three local moms have organized a mother-son dance for Mother’s Day weekend with a superhero theme.Maggie Gosselin, Meredith Thetford and Crystal Garhammer got the project started. They have an inclusive notion of who counts as a mother, too, and prefer the term "mother figure."The event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in the  Flossmoor Community Church Community House, 847 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor. Tickets are $25 per couple and $5 for each additional "superhero."Tickets are available at Receive a 3-day free trial of unlimited digital access.

Saturday, July 2

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
