Steve Phillipos, president of the dealership, believes in the holiday spirit of giving and he has set up a plan to ensure that a needy family will receive a new automobile to hopefully ease their burden.
“A new car can bring a sense of security and also much pleasure to someone,” Phillipos said. “Who doesn’t enjoy getting in their car and just going for a ride, to enjoy the weather or sight-seeing? We can provide this to someone who cannot do it on their own. It is the giving season.”
Here’s how it works. If you, or someone you know, could use a new vehicle, you can submit a story of 200 words or less explaining why winning a brand new Chevrolet Sonic will change your life, or that of someone you know.

The stories must be submitted by Dec. 17. Voting will be done the week of Dec. 18 and the winner will be notified. The Chevrolet Sonic will be presented on Christmas Eve morning at the dealership at 18033 S. Halsted St. in Homewood.
At Monday’s kick-off event for the contest, Phillipos introduced Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld and Ja’Mal Green, a Chicago activist who heads up Majostee All-Stars, a not-for-profit youth organization on Chicago’s South Side. Green said he is hoping to get the news of the giveaway program to the city’s south and west side neighborhoods where many people are in need.
Hofeld and Green will join Phillipos and the Chevrolet of Homewood staff in reviewing the submitted letters.
“It is always a thrill to hand the keys of the new car to the winner and see their excitement on Christmas Eve morning,” Phillipos said. “We have invited the two previous winners to also be on hand to enjoy the presentation and to share their stories.”
Phillipos called the Christmas Eve event “a great celebration.”
“It is the Christmas season,” he said. “Everyone should try to be a little kinder, a little nicer.”
