Veterans Day in Homewood got an early start when eighth grade students at James Hart School gathered Friday morning to salute veterans.
The official ceremony commemorating Veterans Day will be conducted by Wally Burns VFW Post 8077 at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Veterans Memorial on Harwood Avenue.
But District 153 Superintendent Dale Mitchell said he was happy to host the early morning program. Schools in Homewood stayed open because the school board believes it’s important to have students mark Veterans Day.
The school’s band and symphonic orchestra played the national anthem, taps, “God Bless America” and other specially selected music for the program that ended with a breakfast for the assembled veterans and students.
Several years ago, the district selected three words — strong, loyal, proud — to celebrate its schools. As Mitchell thanked the veterans for their service, he said he could turn those three words around on Veterans Day and use them in saluting the military.
There also was a special 242nd birthday celebration for the United States Marine Corps founded on Nov. 10, 1775. Three Marines came forward for the cake presentation and sang three verses of the Marine Corps Hymn for students.
