Author, mother discuss years in search of family history after 1930s displacement

The Cancer Support Center's Annual Spring Gala is set for Friday, April 20, at The Odyssey, 19110 S. Ridgeland Ave. in Tinley Park.  This event, centered on a "Wizard of Oz" theme, includes a tribute to cancer survivors, dinner, silent auction, raffles, entertainment and more. Emmy Award-winning traffic/transportation anchor Roz Varon of ABC 7 Chicago will be on-hand as the program emcee for the evening. Supporters also will celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Cancer Support Center. The evening event opens with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. followed by dinner . . .

Saturday, July 2

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
