Scott Sowinski of Flossmoor will portray the lead character in The Drama Group’s presentation of the musical ‘A New Brain’ over two weekends in March.

Performances are at the Drama Group’s Milord Studio Theatre at 330 W. 202nd St. in Chicago Heights. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 9 and 10, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 15, 16 and 17. Afternoon performances at 2 p.m. are Sunday, March 11, and Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18.

The performance is high energy as it weaves together a story in which Sowinski portrays Gordon, a composer who collapses at lunch.

When Gordon wakes in the emergency room, he is surrounded by his maritime-enthusiast lover, his mother, a co-worker, the doctor and nurses.

This incident sets back his work on a children’s television show with Mr. Bungee, a large green frog. The unfinished work haunts Gordon throughout his medical ordeal, but luckily what was thought to be a tumor is something less serious and Gordon recovers and is grateful for the chance to compose the songs for the show.

The musical was written and composed by William Finn and James Lapine, known for their Tony Award-winning work “Falsettos.” The production at The Drama Group is directed by Jeannie Markionni, who is excited to have the chance to create this new edgy work for a community theater.

Tickets are $21 for adults, $20 for seniors and $15 for students with ID. Group discount rates are available. Tickets are be purchased through the box office at 708-755-3444 or online.
