Homewood-Flossmoor’s Tech Ninja Team is kicking off its season Sunday.
The competitive robotics team is hosting an introductory event from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway in Homewood.
It’s the start of the third year for the Tech Ninja Team, which is made up of middle and high school students from Homewood and Flossmoor. For the past two years, members have designed and built robots to compete in FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). The team works out of the science center.
At the Sept. 10 session, team members will review this year’s challenge, “Relic Recovery,” and start tackling all the tasks that lie ahead ― designing, building and programming their robot and getting ready for the first league meet in November.
FTC encourages young participants to reach out to their community by educating others about FIRST and First Tech Challenge as well as getting the community excited about STEM.
Team members have been active over the summer with displays at the Homewood Farmers Market, presenting at the “Railroads and Rollercoasters” Pop-Up Science event and talking to educators at the recent STEM Network Summit.
Tech Ninja Team mentors are Dan Beezie, Mark Matthews, Jeff McClain, Cameron Nelson and Rick Uecker.
Light refreshments will be served at Sunday’s kickoff.
