Fire department science program for teens is Sept. 23

Putting out a fire takes more than manpower.  There’s lots of science involved, as Homewood Fire Chief Bob Grabowski will explain at the Pop-Up Science Program  “The Science, Math and Physics of Fire Engineering” on Sept. 23.

This program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., hosted by the Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway, is geared toward teens ages 12 to 16. It will be part classroom lecture and part demonstration.

The chief will explain what decisions firefighters make on the scene, and what science and math is used when fighting fires.

By using Homewood Fire Department’s fire engine, he will take what he explained in the classroom portion and bring it to light through hands-on learning using the truck’s water pumping system and hoses.

There is a $25 fee for this program. Participants should bring a sack lunch.
