H-F senior in ‘Distinguished Young Woman’ competition

Tiara Simms, daughter of Renee and Darrell Simms, will be representing Homewood in the Tuesday, Aug. 1, competition for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Illinois. The program will be held in Tinley Park. The Distinguished Young Women competition, formerly known as America’s Junior Miss, is open to high school seniors. Contestants are evaluated on scholastics, an interview, talent, fitness and self-expression. Winners are eligible for college scholarships. Tiara will be a senior at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. Fall events

Saturday, Sept. 24

  • Homewood Fall Fest and Chili Cook-off, noon to 9 p.m. Chili tasting is open to the public for a donation from 3 to 5 p.m. Three live music performances, plus horse-drawn wagon rides, a pumpkin patch, crafts and other activities.

Saturday, Oct. 15

  • Dia de los Muertos in downtown Homewood. Details to follow.
