Sweet treats will rule as Homewood’s annual August festival lives up to its new theme, “Donut Daze.”
The party will run from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, on Martin Avenue in downtown Homewood.
The party will feature fun family activities, including a doughnut toss. Winners will get doughnuts as prizes, and the event is sponsored by Krispy Kreme.
There will be an adventure slide with a zip line from noon to 4 p.m. Donations for the games go toward the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Orchestra’s spring break trip to Cuba.
Music at the Giant Block Party kicks off at noon with the 1950s doo-wop tribute band The Spaniels Forever. Addy’s Corner takes the stage from 3 to 5 p.m. with covers of modern rock favorites like Foo Fighters, Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The evening closes with the local classic blues, rock and soul group The Newports from 6 to 9 p.m. Originally formed in the mid-1960s, The Newports reformed in 2014 and its setlist reflects the south side Chicago vibe of that era.
Additional attractions include a dunk tank from noon to 6 p.m. sponsored by Lisa Grant Orthodontics with proceeds benefiting her non-profit organization, Smiles Change Lives. Family crafts will include rock painting from noon to 2 p.m. and sand art from 2 to 4 p.m.
St. Joseph’s Church is also sponsoring a Block Party Bingo tent at Martin Avenue and Kroner Lane, from 2 to 6 p.m featuring beer and bingo with cards priced at $1, $5 or $10 a game. This event is for patrons 18-years-old and older.
The Homewood Science Center is hosting a special PopUp Science activity, “Krazy for K-9s with Cook County Sheriff K9 Unit” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the center, 18022 Dixie Highway. The event will be an opportunity to meet some of Cook County’s hardest working dogs and learn about training techniques.
The science center event will begin with a presentation and poster display at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m. there will be a meet and greet and photo opportunities with K9s that sniff out narcotics, bombs and missing persons. At noon, dogs and trainers will put on a demonstration.
Food vendors include local favorites such as La Voute, The Cottage on Dixie, Wiley’s Grill, Fratello’s Cafe & Deli, Empanadus, Mother Wilma’s Marshmallow Factory and TJ’s Kettle Corn.
