Winners of this spring’s municipal election were sworn in at the June 5 Flossmoor village board meeting.

Brian Driscoll, who came in third place in the April 4 election, is Flossmoor’s newest village trustee. He took the oath of office along with three incumbent board members — Mayor Paul Braun and Trustees Diane Williams and Philip Minga. Joni Bradley Scott, the new village clerk, was also sworn in.

Two outgoing village board members were recognized for their service.

Pamela Nixon, the former village clerk, first took office in 2000. She chose not to seek re-election.

James Crum was first elected as trustee in 2005. He was defeated in the April election.

Driscoll, who never before sought elected office, said he is happy to get started in his new position.

“It’s a great feeling,” he said. “Friends, family and neighbors supported me and our vision of how we wanted Flossmoor to move forward. To see that in action is very exciting.”

Driscoll said running for office was a significant learning experience.

“I learned so much about the village and residents that I didn’t know before and I’ve lived here basically most of my life,” he said. “It was very enlightening and a great experience.”

Driscoll said his first order of business is to keep the promise he made during the election.

“My plan is to do a good job as a trustee and do the job that the people that elected me asked me to do,” he said.

Bradley Scott was unopposed in the race for village clerk. Being on the village board is an exciting opportunity, she said.

“The residents are really engaged and passionate about our community,” Bradley Scott said. “I share that same passion so the process was very exciting.”

Braun was re-elected to a third term as mayor following a close race with Gigi Gummerson, a former trustee.  According to the Cook County clerk’s office, there was a difference of 232 votes between the two mayoral candidates.

“It was a long, exhausting, but rewarding campaign season that I am pleased is over so that we can return to the work that needs to be done going forward,” Braun said.

Looking ahead, Braun listed his goals for his new term as mayor: continuing with economic development efforts; addressing concerns about property maintenance and repairing streets and sidewalks around the village.

Also, he says he plans to maintain a close and collaborative relationship with Flossmoor School District 161 and Homewood-Flossmoor High School District 233. He said he will work to raise the ratings of the local schools and ensure that “our children receive the best educational opportunities that are possible.”

The mayor’s brother, Judge Bennett Braun, administered the oath of office. He is a Will County Circuit Court judge.
