“I’m so excited! Harvard’s always been my dream school,” Shannon said. She applied to 10 schools and was admitted to each, although Harvard had put her on a deferred list.

That forced Shannon to look at other schools and she was near a final decision when she heard from Harvard that she’d been accepted starting in the fall 2017 semester.

She took an online course through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Online Science, Technology and Engineering Community for five months in 2016. As part of that program, she spent three weeks in Boston and got to visit the Harvard campus in Cambridge, Mass.

She will major in biomedical engineering with plans to enter medical school.

“I think it will be much easier to go to med school around there (Boston-Cambridge area) because I’ll be building connections,” she added.

At H-F, Shannon is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta math fraternity. Her curriculum has been filled with Advanced Placement classes. She is now in advanced math topics, calculus, chemistry and physics. She is the recipient of several scholarships.

Shannon has been on the girls varsity swim team and water polo team throughout her four years at H-F. Harvard also has a swim team, but she won’t compete because academics will require all her time.

In summer 2016, she entered the Junior Olympics swim meet in Houston where she placed 7th in the 50-meter freestyle.

Shannon is the daughter of Brenda and Kevin Jordan of Flossmoor.
