Spring cleaning activities are underway in Flossmoor.

Volunteers have already participated in two roadside clean-up events and do-it-yourself kits are available at village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road, for persons wishing to tidy up their neighborhoods.

The two clean-up days took place March 6 and April 14. Both were non-attendance days at Flossmoor schools.  Volunteers met Public Works staff at the village hall and were accompanied to the clean-up sites.

“The idea was hatched to fill a few needs: to clean up our neighborhoods and provide a volunteer opportunity to community members,” said Laura Brennan-Levy, Flossmoor’s program and event coordinator.

During the first clean-up event, 15 volunteers worked along Western Avenue between Vollmer and Flossmoor roads.  Four volunteers participated in the second clean-up, which took place on Governors Highway between Vollmer and Flossmoor roads.

The program has been expanded to include a do-it-yourself option, Brennan-Levy said. There have been four applications for D.I.Y. neighborhood clean-up kits, including one from a religious education group at Infant Jesus of Prague Church.

Neighborhood clean-up kits include safety vests, trash pickup wands, gloves and bags, and are available for check-out from the village.

“We ask residents to confine clean-up efforts to neighborhood side streets, sidewalks and parks,” Brennan-Levy said.

When the clean-up is complete, garbage bags can be deposited in the dumpster behind village hall.  This volunteer opportunity is open to adults and children age 12 and up who are accompanied by an adult. Brennan-Levy said neighborhood clean-ups provide a great opportunity to earn community service hours.

D.I.Y. requests should be submitted a minimum of two weeks in advance before the clean-up and are subject to supply availability, she said. Upon approval, clean-up kits can be picked up at the village hall reception desk on Fridays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
