Recyclepalooza, the ultimate spring cleaning event, returns to Flossmoor on May 6.

The recycling event, started last year by the Village of Flossmoor Green Committee, will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot at Parker Junior High School, 210 School St.

Volunteers will be on hand to accept donated items so they can be recycled and kept out of landfills. Participants should enter the parking lot from School Street.

New this year is a secure on-site shredding service, which will be available in front of the junior high school. Acceptable items include all paper, file folders, hanging files, computer files, computer paper and notepads. There is no need to remove staples, paperclips, fasteners or rubber bands.

Maggie Bachus, the Green Committee chair, said her group created the event in 2016 for a number of reasons, but largely because the committee is committed to educating community members about how and where to recycle everyday household items.

“Hundreds of residents spent necessary time determining items that needed to be recycled or donated, instead of throwing them away,” Bachus said. “The first year was an incredible success, not only because of the staggering statistics, but because we reduced our community’s contribution to local landfills thanks to the efforts and enthusiasm of the people in our area.“

This year’s Recyclepalooza will be “bigger and better,” Bachus said.

Last year, Bachus said, three truckloads of electronics were recycled, including televisions and computers. Fifty bicycles were donated to Working Bikes in Chicago, which refurbishes and gives them to low-income or homeless individuals. A full truckload of goods and clothing was donated to the South Suburban Humane Society resale shop. Seventy-five trees were given away. Five boxes of hotel shampoo and soap were donated to Respond Now.

Items collected for recycling at this year’s event include televisions (for a $20 fee), electronics, metals, ink and laser jet printing cartridges, American flags, paper and magazines, plastic bags and wrap, light bulbs, batteries and metal dry-cleaning hangers.

Gently-used or new clothing, sporting goods and household items will also be collected for distribution to social service agencies.
