Three outstanding seniors at Homewood-Flossmoor High School are receiving college scholarships after being named 2017 Posse Scholars.
Sopulu Andidobu will attend the University of Michigan, Amber Haywood will attend Cornell University and Malik Sims will attend Pomona College.
The Posse Foundation partners with colleges and universities to provide four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships. These students also will have a support network to help them complete their bachelor’s degrees.
The Posse Foundation was founded in 1989 to identify public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes.
Sopulu will enroll in the University of Michigan’s microbiology program as a pre-med student. She said math and science have been her favorite subjects, and medicine will allow her to use her talents while helping people.
The daughter of Cuthbert and Nonye Andidobu of Homewood, Sopulu has a heavy course load of Advanced Placement (AP) courses. She is in French Club and serves as president of the French National Honor Society. As a junior she was a member of student government.
Sopulu, a graduate of Parker Junior High School, has been playing violin since the fourth grade. Today she is a member of the H-F Viking Orchestra. She also is on the H-F badminton team.
Amber will enter Cornell University as a pre-med student. She said she was influenced by her friends’ parents who work in the field “and I just really enjoy helping people, and I think this is the best way to do that.”
She has been involved with H-F student government, serving as activity chair for three years. Her committee has helped plan dances and activities for Spirit Week.
The daughter of Renaldo and Sheree Haywood of Flossmoor, Amber has had an advanced placement (AP) academic curriculum. She is vice president of the National Honor Society. She also has been a member of the H-F girls golf team since freshman year. She’d never played golf before then but says she’s enjoyed her time learning the game and coalescing with teammates. This year, the team came in third in conference competition.
Malik is excited to be moving from the Midwest to California to attend Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He hasn’t selected a major, but his AP coursework at H-F will give him a sound academic foundation.
At H-F, Malik was a three-year member of the H-F speech team, competing in the poetry, interpretive humor and dramatic and humorous duet acting categories. He was on the H-F lacrosse team for three years but now is focused on boxing through a regional boxing organization.
The son of Angelise and Andre Sims of Chicago Heights, Malik attended Serena Hills School and Parker Junior High. He is a member and volunteer tutor with H-F’s Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, and for the past two years he was the host and moderator of the H-F Steppers Showcase.
