Five H-F seniors selected for Exelon internships

Homewood-Flossmoor High School seniors have been selected for the Exelon Generation internship program. H-F is the only high school participating in the program that typically focuses on incoming college sophomores.

Homewood-Flossmoor High School seniors Ernst Coupet, Lance Davis, Eric Hagerman, Shannon Jordan and Meera Patel have been selected for the Exelon Generation internship program.

The five will be paid for their work during the 10-week internship in summer 2017 at the company’s Warrenville headquarters. They were chosen through an application process and follow-up interview session.

H-F is the only high school participating in the program that typically focuses on incoming college sophomores, according to H-F teacher Tony Svozil, who worked to develop the partnership with Exelon. This is the third year H-F students have been selected and the number of participants has gone up each year.

“Exelon’s senior management has been extremely impressed with the performance of all our graduates,” Svozil said. Their work with the internship program will be presented to Exelon’s board of directors “in hopes of taking the H-F experience and expanding it to the company’s East Coast facilities,” he added.

The five students are enrolled in the College Engineering class taught by Svozil. Several also have been in H-F’s Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program, a specially designed curriculum focusing on engineering and architecture.

Ernest, the son of Ernest and Carol Coupet of Flossmoor, plans to major in mechanical engineering at Florida AMU. He is enrolled in the Physics II class, in addition to College Engineering.

Lance, the son of Lance and Kara Davis of Homewood, plans to major in electrical engineering. He has not yet selected a college. He participated in PLTW his sophomore and junior years.

Eric, the son of Eric and LaShawn Hagerman of Homewood, will major in civil engineering but has not yet selected a college. He has been in PLTW since his sophomore year.

Shannon, the daughter of Kevin and Brenda Jordan of Flossmoor, is deciding between biomedical or electrical engineering for her college major. She is considering enrolling at the University of Michigan. Jordan is also participating in a Massachusetts Institute of Technology online engineering program.

Meera, the daughter of Hamon and Rinku Patel of Flossmoor, will major in computer engineering. She is considering enrolling at Purdue University. She is in the Advanced Placement JAVA computer science class, in addition to College Engineering.

Each of the students said the rigorous curriculum at H-F has prepared them well for the Exelon experience ahead.

H-F alumnus Blake Van Niel, a freshman at Marquette University, completed an internship in 2016 at the Exelon Warrenville office. He was invited back for summer 2017 and has already been assigned to the Byron Nuclear Generating Station.

Blake’s background from Svozil’s class and H-F’s pre-engineering PLTW gave him a strong background for the internship.

In summer 2016, Blake was assigned to the Equipment Reliability Department and was mentored on three projects and one major project. At the end of the internship, he and the other interns gave presentations on their work to the company’s board of directors.

Blake shared information of a web-based design application he designed to show how Exelon equipment was used and how much time it takes away from jobs when the equipment is off-line for repairs. His project is being used to find efficiencies within the department.

“I sat with engineers who use the equipment to learn how they worked on it, and I got to learn about their day-to-day operations,” he said.

At Marquette, Blake has selected biomedical engineering as his major and will focus on biocomputing.
