Homewood trustees: Raj’s renews liquor license request, village considers plan to reimburse downtown developer

The owners of Raj’s Food & Liquor will return to the Homewood Board of Trustees at its Tuesday, Dec. 13, meeting to seek support for a liquor license request.

The Kaur family, which operates a liquor store in Glenwood, hopes to open a liquor store with a sandwich shop where United Liquors currently operates at 17532 Dixie Highway.

The company was unable to obtain the board’s support at the Nov. 8 meeting when its request for a license did not receive a motion from the board. Board members said they were not satisfied with the company’s business plan.

This go-round, the board will consider a new liquor license classification to best accommodate the Kaur family’s request.

In other business, the board will consider a resolution that would enable the village to reimburse Third Coast Developers for the cost of acquiring 2049-2051 Ridge Road, a building that is slated to be part of a project to develop a mixed-use residential/business building from 2033 to 2051 Ridge Road.

Third Coast is planning to purchase the building on Dec. 16 for $291,000, a transaction the village helped facilitate.

Reimbursement for the purchase of the building would come from a planned tax increment financing (TIF) district that is expected to be formed in May.

Other items on the agenda include:

  • Three ordinances setting the village’s property tax levy for 2017-18.
  • A resolution honoring retiring Homewood police officer Thomas Heyne for his 24 years of service to the village.
  • A resolution to use Motor Fuel Tax funding for rock salt purchases.
  • An ordinance assuring that the village will comply with a new state law regarding travel expense reimbursement for village staff.
  • An amendment to the village ordinance governing possession of cannabis in order to comply with a change to Cook County regulations.
  • A budget amendment to pay the final invoice for the Martin Avenue streetscape project.
  • A resolution for the Illinois Department of Transportation regarding work done on any state highways within the village.

The board will also consider whether to cancel its regular meeting on Dec. 27. If that motion is approved, the next regular meeting would be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.
