Santa, carolers, gingerbread house highlight Flossmoor’s Winterfest

Flossmoor’s Winterfest returns Saturday with a variety of holiday activities for the whole family. The annual holiday festival features pictures with Santa, trolley rides, a multi-story gingerbread house, tree lighting ceremonies and a number of activities at businesses in the downtown area and at Flossmoor Commons shopping center. Activities at the Flossmoor Public Library begin at 2 p.m. and conclude with the tree lighting and menorah ceremony in front of the library at 5 p.m.

Flossmoor’s Winterfest returns Saturday with a variety of holiday activities for the whole family.

The annual holiday festival features pictures with Santa, trolley rides, a multi-story gingerbread house, tree lighting ceremonies and a number of activities at businesses in the downtown area and at Flossmoor Commons shopping center.

Activities at the Flossmoor Public Library begin at 2 p.m. and conclude with the tree lighting and menorah ceremony in front of the library at 5 p.m.

A children’s story time with Mayor Paul Braun starts at 2 p.m. Activities at the library between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. include photos with Santa, balloon artists, face painting, 3-D snowflake making and a showing of the film “The Polar Express.”

Other events are scheduled in downtown Flossmoor between 3 and 5 p.m. Trolley rides to gingerbread house tours at Janet Gustafson’s Flossmoor residence will depart from BMO Harris bank. Members of the Grande Prairie Children’s Choir will sing holiday songs. Cookie decorating with Homewood-Flossmoor High School band members will take place at Bakewell Bakery. The H-F Lions Club will provide hot chocolate.

Fresh Starts will conduct a wine shop event and sale at the restaurant between 2 and 4 p.m.

Winterfest activities at Flossmoor Commons will take place between 3 and 4 p.m., including a pop-up event hosted by the Homewood Science Center. The H-F Choir Carolers will appear. Persons at the shopping center can take part in a drawing for a Flossmoor Commons gift basket. There will be tree lighting at the shopping center at 4 p.m. Flossmoor Commons is located on Vollmer Road between Kedzie Avenue and Governors Highway,

Food items will be collected throughout the day for the Martin Luther King Day Food Drive in January. Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the Flossmoor Public Library and also at Kluger Furs in Flossmoor Commons.

Fresh Starts and Flossmoor Station Restaurant and Brewery are offering special deals on Winterfest Saturday. Interested persons can print coupons on the village website, www.flossmoor.org, to get discounts at the two restaurants.

Winterfest is sponsored by the Village of Flossmoor, Flossmoor Public Library and the Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Corporation. Organizers of the event are extending special thanks to Janet Gustafson, the Homewood Science Center, H-F Choir, Grande Prairie Children’s Choir, H-F High School National Honor Society, Parker Junior High School National Junior Honor Society, Infant Jesus of Prague eighth grade religious education class, H-F Lions Club and downtown and Flossmoor Commons businesses.
